It's easy to sit on the sidelines and comment in ways such as 'They should train their dog', (yes I've been guilty of that...sorry Kari!) however Kari's journey will open your eyes to exactly how much effort is put into training dogs.
This memoir turned novel, really embraces the deep connection an owner has with their pet. Isis, AKA Smiley Bird, is a large presence in Kari's family and in most cases, the most important part of the household. However Kari faces an uphill battle in an attempt to train Isis. She experiences inconsistencies with various trainers and sometimes with the same trainer which make the journey frustrating.
However she never falters in her dedication to help Isis overcome his reactive nature. As the reader, you will easily fall in love with this lovable canine, warts and all.
I recommend Bark and Lunge to anyone who enjoys a story about real friendship and love. Even if you are not a dog owner, this story will capture your heart.
