I'd really like to talk about the characters before anything else, simply because they were incredibly engaging. If there's one thing Jones can do well, it's character development. Prince Valerian has to live up to the shadow of his brother and in doing so, must learn from every lesson that comes his way. He continually grows throughout the novel, capturing your attention from the very beginning.
Then there's Mercy. A young, optimistic and heroic teen. A healer. Although she is young, Mercy overcomes many struggles and maintains her beliefs. For readers, she will be the constant in the story, as well as the perfect match for Prince Valerian.
As this is a fantasy novel, there are so many enjoyable elements for fans of the genre, dragons for one. There could have been a little more on this subject, but as this is the first in the series, it won't be the last we hear of them.
Jones' writing is easy to read and clever, despite my four star rating. My only quarm is the longer aspects of the novel - scenes that dragged on just a little to long - but it is a minor flaw in a fantastic story setting. Overall, Jones' writing style is engaging with an underlying romance that will make you feel warm and fuzzy.
If you're a reader of fantasy you're going to love this novel.
