Complete with a few gruesome ends for some of our Alexandrians, the mid season return of TWD didn't disappoint, but what did we actually learn this week?
For good measure, and to remind us that no one is safe, the writers also took the life of Rick's girlfriend Jessie, and that other son of hers, Ron, who just wanted to take down Rick and Carl. Poor Ron. All of the talk, none of the game. Out of the three, the most spectacular death was that of Ron due to Michonne's delectable samurai-sword-through-the-chest move. Ah...bliss.
On that subject, why was it that Rick and Carl just stood there while everything happened around them? Sure, Rick lopped off Jessie's arm eventually, but not until Carl 's life was in danger. I suppose this is the point we are to feel helplessness. Even after all of the training and every long winded speech about Rick knowing more than everyone else, he can't save the Alexandrians.
Even so, the scene itself was quite strange, especially with the addition of Rick-flashbacks while he watched Jessie being torn to shreds. It was a little spacey and out of the ordinary for the show.
Back at Alexandria, and after the demise of Jessie and her crew, the Alexandrians and our Apoclyptonites have a few hundred walkers to take care of, so of course Rick starts taking them down one by one because, hell, someone's got to do it. Right?
Maybe he's blowing off some steam after losing Jessie, or maybe it's because good old Ron didn't die without sending a stray bullet into Carl's scull. Oh yes. You heard right. Carl is going to be graphic novel Carl, complete with one eye. This does in fact make him slightly more bad-ass which seems to be the way his character is heading.
Maybe it's a reminder to us all that our apocolyptonites don't take lightly to an attack on one of their own, meaning of course that I now have to admit that they are in fact, Alexandrians. The only question left to answer is: When will Negan strike, and who will we lose in the process?
Overall, the mid season return of TWD, albeit a little strange in the beginning, was pretty epic. Let's hope the follow up episode isn't a let down as they have been in the past.
